Smart Stats: Largely because of WPI's unique approach to education, the Association of American Colleges and Universities selected WPI as one of only 16 national Leadership Institutions to help define the future of liberal education.
Projects
You don't have to wait four years to do something good in the world.
"Projects! Projects! Projects!" That's how one professor responded when asked what makes WPI different. And he's right. Every student completes two projects in addition to course work. Every project represents an opportunity to apply the knowledge you learn in your classes and labs to real-world problems – sometimes on campus, sometimes off campus at sites around the world. And most projects are undertaken in teams, an invaluable experience for getting things done in any profession. The project-based philosophy doesn't just make good educational sense. It makes sense for students who want use their knowledge to change the world for the better.
The Two Projects
Interactive Project. Work in a student team to tackle an issue that relates science and technology to society. (Translation: This is your chance to solve problems that matter to people and communities.)
Major Project. Design and build some hardware. Make a new discovery in the lab. Develop a new process. This is where you put what you learn about your major field into action, working in a team to define a problem, then developing a novel and creative solution.
WPI's Global Perspective Program has grown to encompass nearly 20 cities on five continents. WPI students can travel to complete their required projects or participate in exchange programs. We have more than 20 project centers including New York City, London, Venice, Bangkok, and Limerick, Ireland. Learn more about our Global Perspective Program.
