Open House Multicultural Reception

During our October open house, students are invited to a special reception to meet the Admissions Coordinator for Multicultural Recruitment and the Director of Diversity Programs. This is an opportunity to learn about support programs for students of color, meet current students, and ask questions about campus life. Envision Overnight Program: Tuesday, November 10–Wednesday, November 11, 2009

This is an opportunity to stay overnight prior to the November open house program to learn about academic programs, meet current students, tour campus, and Envision yourself at WPI! Prospective students spend the night on campus in the residence halls and attend our November open house. Travel scholarships are available to students. Reservations are required; contact the admissions office for more information.

Umoja-Unidad Experience for Admitted Students: Tuesday, April 13 or Tuesday April 20, 2010

Our annual multicultural overnight program for accepted students called "Umoja-Unidad" takes place in April. This program allows you to stay in the residence halls and introduces you to the WPI community and to other incoming African-American, Latino, and Native American students. Students who attend the overnight program will also attend the open house program the following day on either April 14 or April 21.

The program is designed to let you experience life as a WPI student and learn more about our academic programs and social community. A limited number of travel scholarships are available for first-time visitors.

Excellence in Mathematics, Science and Engineering Program (EMSEP)

Established in 1993, EMSEP is a comprehensive network of support services for students of color while enrolled at WPI. The program empowers students by helping them establish a solid academic and personal development foundation to increase their potential for college success. Marshall / Chavez / Means Scholarship

Established to recognize the academic achievements and leadership skills of African-American, Latino and American Indian students, this merit scholarship program is named in honor of Thurgood Marshall, Cesar Chavez and Russell Means, all of whom made significant contributions to their communities and to American society. These competitive scholarships will be awarded by the Admissions Committee based upon the applicant's academic performance in high school, standardized test scores, leadership, extracurricular involvement and community service. All applicants for admission are automatically considered for merit scholarships. No additional applications are required. These academic merit scholarships vary in amounts, but typically range between $12,500 and $25,000, and are renewable for four years. More...

Student activities for underrepresented students of color

Currently, there are four student-run organizations specifically for underrepresented students of color: the Black Student Union, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Hispanic and Caribbean Student Association (HCSA). WPI has several programs designed to encourage young African-American, Latino and American Indian students to explore areas of engineering and science.
